|   |   | Harbor Mountain is well-known in Sitka. It is the only mountain in town with a road up it. The road brings you to about 2000 feet, just high enough to be in the open alpine. The peak itself is quite challenging to reach; I have not yet made it to the peak. About 100 feet below the summit, there is a section which requires a few simple rock climbing moves, but there is a 300-foot vertical fall on one side into a rocky bowl, and an even longer tumbling fall on the other side. There is a small shelter at the spot where this picture was taken. My first summer here I ran up the mountain to the shelter most clear nights, just to sleep in the mountains and be up high for sunrise. It is a gorgeous location, with the sweeping slopes of Harbor Mountain in front of you and the rugged mountains of interior Baranof Island behind you. |
