|   |   | Alaska's Inside Passage runs from Skagway, at the north end of the Lynn Canal, to Ketchikan near the Canadian border. The ferries that run through the Inside Passage connect the isolated communities of Southeast Alaska with each other and with towns in British Columbia, and finally with the town of Bellingham, Washington. The Inside Passage was recently designated a National Scenic Byway. Traveling the Inside Passage is a wonderful experience. Tree-covered mountains sweep down to the water's edge, waterfalls tumble over far-off cliffs, airy ridges tower above the forested slopes sending glaciers deep into lush valleys. Clouds drift among the trees as storms come and go. Storms drop their heavy rains, and all the passengers take shelter under the roof on the open upper deck, or retreat to the lower compartments to watch the rain pelt the windows. But the storms clear, and everyone looks around in wonder at the overwhelming beauty of the freshly emerging landscape. |
