Gregory in the Mountains

Gregory in the Mountains (wp0051)

Crossing the Island, we wondered if we would see much wildlife. We saw mostly rock and snow, as this picture suggests. We saw bear prints in the snow high on the ridges, but we saw no bears. We saw ptarmigan and grouse, and a tern-like bird cartwheeling along the cliffs at a high mountain lake. We saw glacier worms, which are tiny thread-like worms half an inch long which live in the snow and ice of glaciers and snowfields. They are a little-studied organism which took us quite by surprise.
