Surveying the Glacier

Surveying the Glacier (wp0036)

The hike across Baranof Island is spectacular. The route climbs through Medvejie Valley to Camp Lake, and then onto Mt. Bassie. The route crosses the crevassed snowfields of Mt. Bassie and gains a ridge to an unnamed peak (Peak 4140) near the middle of Baranof Island. The route follows this ridge to the two glaciers visible in this photograph. The snowfield to the right drops about 700 feet down to the first glacier.

The route follows these glaciers for a couple miles and then weaves among pristine mountain lakes , and finally drops off one last unnamed mountain to Baranof Lake. The route ends at Baranof Warm Springs, a tiny village on the east side of the island.
